Chapter 8
All the commandments, that I command you this day, take great care to observe: that you may live, and be multiplied, and going in may possess the land, for which the Lord swore to your fathers.
And you shall remember all the way through which the Lord your God has brought you for forty years through the desert, to afflict you and to prove you, and that the things that were in your heart might be made known, whether you would keep his commandments or no.
He afflicted you with want, and gave you manna for your food, which neither you nor your fathers knew: to shew that m not in bread alone does man live, but in every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
your raiment, with which you were covered, has not decayed for age, and your foot is not worn, lo this is the fortieth year,
That you may consider in your heart, that as a man trains up his son, so the Lord your God has trained you up.
That you should keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and walk in his ways, and fear him.
For the Lord your God will bring you into a good land, of brooks and of waters, and of fountains: in the plains of which and the hills deep rivers break out:
A land of wheat, and barley, and vineyards, wherein fig trees and pomegranates, and oliveyards grow: a land of oil and honey.
Where without any want you shall eat your bread, and enjoy abundance of all things: where the stones are iron, and out of its hills are dug mines of brass:
That when you have eaten, and art full, you may bless the Lord your God for the excellent land which he has given you.
Take heed, and beware lest at any time you forget the Lord your God, and neglect his commandments and judgments and ceremonies, which I command you this day:
Lest after you have eaten and art filled, have built goodly houses, and dwelt in them,
And shall have herds of oxen and flocks of sheep, and plenty of gold and of silver, and of all things,
your heart be lifted up, and you remember not the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage:
And was your leader in the great and terrible wilderness, wherein there was the serpent burning with his breath, and the scorpion and the dipsas, and no waters at all: who brought forth streams out of the hardest rock,
And fed you in the wilderness with manna which your fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved you, at the last he had mercy on you,
Lest you should say in your heart: My own might, and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me.
But remember the Lord your God, that he has given you strength, that he might fulfil his covenant, concerning which he swore to your fathers, as this present day shews.
But if you forget the Lord your God, and follow strange gods, and serve and adore them: behold now I foretell you that you shall utterly perish.
As the nations, which the Lord destroyed at your entrance, so shall you also perish, if you be disobedient to the voice of the Lord your God.
