	¿Cuál sería la reacción de san Agustín si volviese al mundo en este comienzo del tercer milenio, y tuviera que valorar la actitud moderna hacia el matrimonio y hacia la sexualidad humana?&lt;br /&gt;
	Creo que constataría, con sorpresa o sin ella, dos fenómenos que (si bien con otros matices) él experimentó en su tiempo; dos actitudes que combatió; dos valoraciones, aparentemente situadas en polos opuestos y sin embargo íntimamente relacionadas entre sí.&lt;br /&gt;

 <description>&lt;p&gt;What would be St. Augustine&#039;s reaction if he returned to the world at this start of the third millennium, and had to evaluate the modern attitude toward marriage and toward human sexuality?&lt;br /&gt;
	I believe that (with surprise, or perhaps without it) he would identify two phenomena that he experienced in his own time (even if under somewhat different modulations); two attitudes that he combatted; two valuations, seemingly located at opposite poles, and nevertheless intimately related to each other.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;	Si este ensayo es algo largo, será porque (al menos en la opinión del autor y en la de los editores) la tesis que propone parece suficientemente innovadora para pedir una exposición tan extensa, tanto en términos del fondo histórico como de las implicaciones actuales. De todos modos, aunque desarrollado con tanta amplitud, el argumento que propone es bastante sencillo. Intentaré resumirlo brevemente.&lt;/p&gt;

	[[ Fino al Concilio Vaticano l&#039;espressione &lt;em&gt;remedium concupiscentiae &lt;/em&gt;indicava uno dei fini secondari del matrimonio, tradizionalmente inteso come una sorta di &quot;legittimazione&quot; della sessualità disordinata. Quest&#039;articolo si propone di corregere una tale impostazione, che comporta una visione distorta della santità matrimoniale, riprendendo la dottrina agostiniana e tomassiana, e anche la teologia del corpo di Giovanni Paolo II. Qui si sostiene che la concupiscenza (che è diversa dal vero amore sessuale) è una forza che bisogna combattere e andare via via purificando nella vita matrimoniale, in tal modo che i coniugi si aprano reciprocamente nel dono di sé. Il matrimonio diventa così una chiamata alla crescita nell&#039;amore, in uno sforzo degli sposi, sorretti dalla grazia, per conquistare la purezza e la casta donazione che è propria dell&#039;originale condizione sessuale-coniugale umana. ]]&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;	For a large part of this century, theologians, canonists and anthropologists have been engaged in a vigorous debate about the ends of marriage, and at times about its very nature.  On the one hand was the traditional (often termed the &quot;procreative&quot; or &quot;institutional&quot;) understanding, which presented the ends of matrimony in a clear hierarchical manner: a &quot;primary&quot; end (procreation) and two &quot;secondary&quot; ends (mutual help and the remedy for concupiscence).  On the other hand, there had emerged a new view which, without necessarily denying the importance of procreation, wished at least equal standing to be given to other personalist values linking husband and wife: mutual love, the conjugal union in its spiritual and not just its physical aspect, etc.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;	Nessuno ha mai messo in dubbio la genialità del pensiero di Sant&#039;Agostino. Ciò nonostante, alcuni sostengono che non era privo di una vena di pessimismo, specialmente per quanto concerne la sessualità umana; e che l&#039;influenza successiva di Agostino - in proporzione alla sua genialità - avrebbe segnato la dottrina della Chiesa, fino ai nostri giorni, con un&#039;etica sessuale insufficiente e negativa. Tale giudizio - a mio parere - non è giusto né verso Sant&#039;Agostino né verso la dottrina cattolica sulla morale sessuale.&lt;/p&gt;
