Marriage is a vocation; it is the vocation to which the vast majority of people are called. It has two clear purposes or, as the Catechism says, a "twofold end...: the good of the spouses themselves and the transmission of life" (n. 2363). It is a call both to faithful love and to fruitful love.
1. The first purpose is that spouses grow together in goodness, and in that openness to goodness which prepares them for heaven. This means specifically that they are meant to grow in loving God (the first commandment) by means of growing in love for each other throughout their lifetime.

I have been asked to reply to an article written under the pseudonym of Polonaise in the June issue of the Catholic World Report. Anonymous writings do not appeal to me, since I feel that each one should have the courage of his or her convictions. So, while Polonaise involves me in his animadversions, I would probably have let that pass, also because it is never pleasant or easy to answer a critic who has not understood the position he criticizes. But since he also misrepresents the teaching of the magisterium (partly by ignoring it), I think your readers are entitled to some comments which hopefully can clarify some important points.

De nos jours, on étudie moins l'histoire. C'est dommage parce que il agit d'une matière qui pourrait nous enseigner des leçons utiles, et même, dans certains case, des leçons extrêmement utiles. L'histoire est, notamment, parsemée d'ironie. Il y a des cas assez curieux, et encore et encore d'autres plutôt graves, dont il convient absolument d'être informés, surtout quand ils nos affectent de près par leur conséquences. C'est à cette dernière sorte d'ironie de l'histoire que je me réfère. J'essayerai de m'expliquer.

La società occidentale sta precipitando in una condizione patologica; per molti aspetti è già seriamente ammalata. Non sono é chi scrive a fare questa pungente diagnosi, ma il Santo Padre. Nella sua Lettera alle Famiglie del febbraio del 1994, Giovanni Paolo II non esita ad affermare: "la nostra civiltà... dovrebbe rendersi conto di essere, da diversi punti di vista, una civiltà malata, che genera profonde alterazioni nell'uomo" (n. 20). È' esagerata una diagnosi così lucida? Non credo. È' pessimistica? No, tale non è, perché viene da un medico fermamente convinto che il paziente debba vivere in buona salute ed è in grado di guarire, e che egli stesso conosce e possiede il giusto farmaco per portare a termine la cura.
